Man accused of killing his 3 children commits suicide in cell
The Mainichi Shimbun KYOTO -- A man accused of strangling his three teenage children has used his socks to hang himself in the cell where he was being held pending the start of his murder trial later this month, police said Tuesday. Mitsuaki Oji was found hanging in his solitary cell at the Kyoto Detention Center just before 9 p.m. on Sunday night and rushed to a hospital, but died shortly after arriving. He had appeared untroubled when a patrol passed by his cell about 20 minutes before he was discovered. "We want to further work on our patrols and understanding of the state of those being held here to make sure something like this never happens again," Atsushi Matsuda, head of the center, said. Oji's murder trial had been scheduled to open at the Kyoto District Court on May 21. Oji was accused of having drugged his two sons and a daughter senseless and then strangled them as they slept in the family home in Kyoto's Fushimi-ku on July 2 last year. The Mainichi Shimbun KYOTO -- A man who killed his three teenage children by giving them sleeping potions and then strangling them has been charged with murder, Kyoto District Public Prosecutors Office said. Mitsuaki Oji, 42, was indicted for the murder of his sons, aged 16 and 14, and 13-year-old daughter. Oji admits to the allegations. "I have no idea why I did what I did," he said. Prosecutors said Oji killed his children in early July. He was vague about his motives, so law enforcers had him undergo a psychiatric evaluation, which showed he was capable of being held responsible for his actions, police said. The Mainichi Shimbun KYOTO -- A man accused of killing his three teenage children in their home here is to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, it has been learned. On Friday, the Kyoto District Public Prosecutors Office filed an application at the Kyoto District Court to have the accused killer, 42-year-old Mitsuaki Oji, detained for testing to determine his mental condition at the time of the alleged killings. The court granted a period of three months until Oct. 22 to hold Oji in custody and perform the tests on him. The Mainichi Shimbun KYOTO -- A jobless middle-aged man, under arrest for killing his three children in an attempted murder-suicide pact, lied to his wife that the money he received from his mother was actually his salary for working, police said. Kyoto police suspect that Mitsuaki Oji, 42, from Kyoto's Fushimi-ku, attempted to commit suicide after killing his three children because he had no job and was pessimistic about the future. Oji had reportedly given 300,000 yen to his wife every month and told her it was his salary for working at an interior company, but he wasn't employed by the firm, police said. His 72-year-old mother, who lived with Oji and his family, gave the money to Oji for more than a year. Oji's suicide note partly explains why he killed his children. "I don't have funds for my children to go to university after I die," it says. (Mainichi) July 5, 2007 Arrest warrant obtained for father over murder of his three kids
Japan Today KYOTO — Police obtained an arrest warrant Monday night for a 42-year-old man on suspicion of killing his three teenage children, who were found dead at their house in the morning. Police plan to arrest Mitsuaki Oji, who is currently having treatment at a hospital for taking a large amount of sleeping pills, when he recovers. The suspect was found collapsed at the house with a suicide note that read "After I die, my children would be pitiable and in need" — suggesting he had decided to kill them. Police said they suspect he determined to kill himself and his children due to financial difficulties, as he was not working for a Kyoto company he told his family he was working for. They said strangulation marks were discovered on the necks of the three children — two sons Shota, 16, and Kenta, 14, and daughter Miho, 13. But the police believe Oji may also have used sleeping pills, as an empty bottle of 100 sleeping pills was found in the house. His 39-year-old wife felt groggy when she got up on Monday morning, and told police her husband gave her thicker-than-usual tea the previous evening. © 2007 Kyodo News. All rights reserved. The Yomiuri Shimbun A high school student and two middle school students of Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, were murdered on Monday morning, apparently by their father, whose suicide attempt failed, police said. The three were identified as children of Mitsuaki Oji: Shota, 16, a second-year student at Toba High School; Kenta, 14, a third-year student at Fujimori Middle School; and Miho, 13, a second-year student at the same middle school. Oji, an interior decorator, was found sitting semiconscious by Shota's bed, the police said. The police suspect the father, 42, killed the three and tried to kill himself. The police received an emergency phone call from Oji's wife at about 7:20 a.m. She reportedly told the police that she found three children lying unconscious. The Mainichi Shimbun KYOTO -- Three teenage children died here Monday, apparently after their father strangled them in a murder-suicide attempt from which he later recovered, police said. The wife of 42-year-old Kyoto resident Mitsuaki Oji phoned for an ambulance at about 7:25 a.m. on Monday, saying that she had woken up to find her three children collapsed and unconscious. The children, Shota, 16, Kenta, 14, and Miho, 13, were taken to a hospital, but were confirmed dead soon afterwards. Oji was also found unconscious, but he later recovered. A suicide note from Oji to his 39-year-old wife was reportedly found in the couple's bedroom. Police have opened a murder investigation and are questioning Oji on suspicion of killing his children and attempting to take his own life. Investigators said the children appeared to have been strangled with a rope or similar object. Sleeping pills were missing from the couple's bedroom, and police suspect Oji swallowed them. Reports have surfaced that Oji was mentally unstable. Oji's 72-year-old mother also lived in the home. Police said they were continuing to investigate the motives behind the case.
