KITAKYUSHU -- A woman has been handed a suspended prison term for strangling her son who was suffering from an incurable brain disease.

The Kokura branch of the Fukuoka District Court sentenced Michiyo Koro, 65, a pensioner living in Kitakyushu, to 2 1/2 years in prison, suspended for three years, for homicide with consent.

"It's indeed regrettable that the defendant committed the crime even though the victim was about to be admitted to a hospital after she had earnestly cared for him for about eight years," Judge Akira Shigetomi said. "However, the pain she suffered as a result of killing her beloved son must have been more terrible than we can imagine."

On the night of Sept. 27, Koro used an electric cord to strangle her 45-year-old son, who had a progressive brain disease, to relieve him from the suffering caused by his illness, according to the ruling.
