Mentally ill mother strangles 4-year-old daughter

A mentally ill woman has been arrested for strangling her daughter to death at their home in western Tokyo.

Police announced that Chikusa Yoshizawa, 47, a resident of Koganei, has admitted to the murder of her 4-year-old daughter Haruka.

"I did a terrible thing. I wanted to commit suicide after killing my daughter, but couldn't," she was quoted as telling investigators.

Yoshizawa committed the murder at their apartment in the Midoricho district of Koganei at around 2 p.m. on Thursday, local police said. Yoshizawa is mentally ill and was suffering from a nervous breakdown, according to investigators.

TOKYO — Police on Thursday night arrested a woman for strangling her 4-year-old daughter at their apartment in Koganei City, Tokyo. Chigusa Yoshizawa, 47, was arrested for allegedly strangling her daughter, Haruka, with a kimono sash around 2 p.m. According to police, the victim was found by the woman’s brother-in-law around 8 p.m. Her husband had asked his brother to visit the apartment after no one answered the phone. The brother found Haruka dead and Yoshizawa standing on the balcony.

Police said that Yoshizawa admits killing her daughter. She was quoted by police as saying: “I thought about committing suicide after I killed her, but I couldn’t go through with it.” Her husband told police she has been stressed out from child-raising recently.
