Mom arrested for dumping body of newborn baby in locker

YOKOHAMA -- A young mother who abandoned the body of her newborn baby in a locker here has been arrested, police said.

Miho Igarashi, 21, an unemployed woman from Yokohama's Tsurumi-ku, stands accused of abandoning a corpse. She has admitted to the allegations.

"I gave birth to my baby in the bathroom of my condominium on the night of April 26," Igarashi was quoted as telling police.

Igarashi put the body of her newborn baby boy in a bag and left it inside a locker at a parking lot in Yokohama's Kohoku-ku at around noon on May 1, local police said.

The baby had been dead for a week to 10 days when his body was found, police said.
