AMAGASAKI, Hyogo--A 5-year-old girl from Itami, Hyogo Prefecture, who was hospitalized Monday evening with multiple bruises died Tuesday morning, and police have begun questioning her 31-year-old mother, suspecting the girl was fatally assaulted, police said.

According to the police, the girl was taken to a hospital in Nishinomiya in the prefecture by the emergency services, which received a call saying that the girl was unconscious after falling. The police believe the kindergartner may have suffered a brain hemorrhage, and they conducted an autopsy Tuesday afternoon.

The girl, who was from a family of six, was temporarily taken into protection by a prefectural center for children and family affairs in December 2004, when the center suspected the girl might have been physically abused because her arm was broken. The girl was again taken into protective custody by the center in December 2006. The center allowed her to leave in February of this year, judging that it was safe for her to go home after an interview with her parents, the center said.
