KAWAGUCHI, Saitama -- A high school girl was found dead at an apartment complex here, apparently after she committed suicide by jumping from the building, police said.

Police said the 15-year-old girl was spotted lying face-down on the second-floor roof of the entrance of the home by a resident of a neighboring apartment at about 5:25 p.m. on Sunday. She had sustained heavy injuries to her body, and was already dead.

Since there was no evidence of a struggle, police believe that the girl committed suicide. Investigators said the girl had recently told her mother "I don't want to go to the school I'm at now. I want to attend a local school."

Police said several residents in the apartment block where the girl was found reported hearing a thud between about 11:30 p.m. and midnight on Saturday. Sandals thought to belong to the student, who was dressed in plain clothes, were found between the sixth and seventh floors of the apartment block. It is common in Japan for people committing suicide to remove their shoes.
