Single-mother child benefits hit record
The Asahi Shimbun The health ministry's white paper on single-mother households, approved by the Cabinet on Friday, showed that more women than ever are getting single-mother child-rearing allowances. About 987,000 women were getting the benefits as of the end of February compared to 625,000 at the end of fiscal 1998 and 937,000 at the end of fiscal 2005. The white paper said the average income of single-mother households in 2005 stood at 2.334 million yen, up 3.9 percent from the previous year. The monthly allowances range from 9,850 yen to 41,720 yen, depending on the woman's income when there is one child. (IHT/Asahi: June 2,2007) |
