Kanagawa gov't settles for 10 million yen after death of student in Phys. Ed. class
The Mainichi Shimbun YOKOHAMA -- The parents of a high school student who died after collapsing during a physical education class reached a settlement in court Friday with the prefectural government that operates the school. Under the settlement brokered by the Yokohama District Court, the Kanagawa Prefectural Government will apologize and pay 10 million yen to the parents of Tomohiro Ono, 15. Ono collapsed during a 3,000-meter run in a physical education class at Kanagawa Prefectural Odawara Johoku Industrial Highs School on May 7, 2002, according to the suit. The PE teacher, thinking it was hyperventilation, had him rest in the school nurse's office. Though Ono suffered from repeated spasms, neither the nurse on duty nor his homeroom teacher called an ambulance. It was only after Ono was taken home by taxi that he was rushed to hospital by ambulance, where he died from a brain edema at around 2:45 p.m. the same day. The parents had filed the suit demanding the prefectural government pay some 66.9 million yen in compensation, arguing that their son died because the school failed to take appropriate measures.
