Women's and Men's Rights Groups in Japan

Women's Groups in Japan

  • Association of Foreign Wives of Japanese.  The name is self explanatory.  They seem to be very active.
  • Field of Mugi. (English) (JapaneseOn online group for present, future and past working mothers and other women willing to support working mothers.
  • Single Mothers' Forum. (Japanese only) An organization of which members are mostly members of single mother families. It carries out various activities aiming at a creation of society in which single mothers and their children can live comfortably. Its activities includes making propositions, exchanging information, and providing mutual assistance. It works on the administration and pressures it to solve the problems concerning social systems, which are posed in this paper as well as appeals to public opinions for elimination of discrimination and expansion of rights through the media.
  • Friendship Asia House Cosmos (Japanese) FAH Cosmos acts as a shelter for mainly unwed non-Japanese mothers and their half-Japanese children. It is a sister organization to Nonohana-no-ie under Ichiryu-kai. The residents of FAH Cosmos come from various countries including Cambodia, Iran, the Philippines, Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Taiwan and Korea, many of whom are the victims of domestic violence who have no visas and no birth certificates for their children.
  • Foreign Wives Club.  An online community by and for women in bicultural marriages.  Not just Japan, but appears to have significant Japan content.
  • Women's Online Media.  (Japanese) (English).  Women's Online Media(WOM) is one of many  projects of the Keio University Research Consortium.  WOM aims at introducing women to the uses of electronic media. WOM has been working on the initiative Japanese Women Now in order to provide information about contemporary legal/social environment surrounding Japanese women.
  • Yokohama Women's Association for Communication and Networking.  (Japanese) (English).  The Yokohama Women's Association for the Communication and Networking (YWACN), the Central Institution for Gender Equality (see the Ordinance of the City of Yokohama for Promoting Gender Equality, Article 11), carries out the management of the Yokohama Women's Community Center along with the Yokohama Women's Forum and Forum Yokohama. YWACN also holds a variety of projects in line with action plans for gender equality. Gender equality is defined as the guarantee that both men and women are seen as equals in society being able to participate in activities in every aspect of society.
  • Republic of Boshi Katei (Japanese only) - I seem to see this one referenced often.
  • Let's Single (Japanese only)
  • Single Mother Conference Room (Japanese only)

Men's Groups in Japan

  • Father's Rights In Japan. (English)
  • Father's Website. (Japanese)  (Not really just for fathers, but given the name it is listed here also.) A group started by Japanese fathers, but also supporting mothers and non-Japanese who are cut off from their children's lives.  They are interested in changing Japanese custody and visitation laws.  The bulletin board is mostly Japanese, but some people use English also.  Highly recommended.
